On International Women’s Day 2023, Sprout celebrated the launch of Women in Industrial Design: A Collection of Conversations With 12 Women Shaping the Future of the Industry. Over the course of two years, we met with 12 women industrial designers — a diverse group of individuals at all stages in their careers — to hear their experiences navigating an industry where they’ve long been underrepresented.
The interviews were compiled into a 101-page book, which was launched with an event that gathered over 200 designers and industry professionals.
In developing the visual identity for this project, it felt important to choose a color palette that was bold and vibrant without shying away from femininity. The idea was to embrace femininity as powerful and commanding. The ‘W’ mark was adapted from a typeface and altered to include a space in the letter form, signifying the gender gap. Though there is a gap, there is a forward trajectory to the letterform that signifies the effort to make a significant change.
The Sprout team started this project to generate a holistic and empathetic understanding of the gender gap in the industrial design space, and identify solutions to creating more equitable environments. As designers it is our job to challenge assumptions, redefine problems and create solutions. If we ever hope to encourage more diversity in the industry, we have to ask the hard questions while putting these principles into practice. We hope that sharing this collection of conversations will spark conversations of your own.
